Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. The second child of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most famous for her involvement in performance skills, political stance and gift for rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the title "delicate, sensitive" at the age of eight years old. Latifah began singing in the choir of the Shiloh Baptist Church located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" as the character of Dorothy in a play of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mom was a major influencer as she was always in contact with the children and music. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was contacted by Latifah's daughter to perform at the dance. Mark the 45 King invited her to appear at an event at the school.
