Wiehl graduated from West Valley High School, Yakima. She was born in Yakima. She has a degree from Barnard College (1983), an MA in Arts in Literature Studies from the University of Queensland (1985), and an Doctor of Jurisprudence from Harvard Law School (1997).
Wiehl was a prosecutor in the past of the US Attorney. She worked as an NPR legal reporter. She was "the deputy chief investigator for Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee at the period of the impeachment of President Clinton." She was a tenured professor of legal studies at the University of Washington School of Law, Seattle from 1995-2001, and she directed in charge of the Trial Advocacy Program.
